Preposiciones en ingles

La preposición es una palabra normalmente colocada delante de nombres o pronombres.
En inglés cuando hay una preposición seguida de verbo, éste va en la forma de gerundio -ing.
Presentamos a continuación las preposiciones más comunes en inglés, que a menudo no corresponden con el significado en español.

at Se usa delante de la hora y la edad; expresa lugar y posición o tiempo determinado:
Ejemplos:
I get up at eight o’clock. At Christmas.
There is a man at the door. At midnight.
I met him at the station. At table.

about significa “acerca de” o “sobre”.
Ejemplos:
A book about aeroplanes.
I worry about my children.
Tell me about yourself.

in se usa cuando se refiere al interior de un lugar, delante de los años, meses y estaciones del año y con partes del día.
Ejemplos:
He is in the room.
I was born in 1964.
In summer, in winter.
In January, in May.
In the morning.
In the afternoon.

on se usa cuando algo toca una superficie, delante de los días de la semana y delante de las fechas.
Ejemplos:
On Sunday, on Tuesdays.
The picture on the wall.
On the first of January.

by significa junto a; también introduce el agente en la voz pasiva, y formas de viajar.
Ejemplos:
This book was written by Dickens.
Sitting by the window.
Travel by bus, by plane, by train.

from indica un punto de partida en un lugar o en el tiempo.
Ejemplos:
The plane from Manchester.
I come from New York.
From nine to twelve.
From morning to night.
From Monday to/till Friday.

of expresa cualidad, posesión o conexión.
Ejemplos:
A friend of mine.
A teacher of Spanish.
The king of Spain.
Fond of music.
It is very kind of you.
A picture of Helen.

off se usa para denotar alejamiento o que algo no toca una superficie.
Ejemplos:
Keep off the grass.
Get your feet off the chair.
We live off the main road.

for se refiere a un período de tiempo, indica propósito.
Ejemplos:
You have been here for three weeks.
You have been waiting for the bus for ten minutes.
This book is for you.
This money is for lunch.

since se usa en frases de tiempo y significa a partir de ese tiempo; se utiliza con un pretérito perfecto.
Ejemplos:
We have been married since 1980.
I haven’t eaten since Monday.

during se usa con períodos de tiempo conocidos y también significa “en el curso de”.
Ejemplos:
During 1976.
During the war.
During the winter.
During the night.

above significa “más arriba” o “por encima de” sin tocar superficie.
Ejemplos:
A picture above the fireplace.
The plane flew above the clouds.

over algunas veces tiene el mismo significado que above. También se usa cuando toca una superficie cubriéndola.
Ejemplos:
He put his jacket over his shoulders.
She put her jacket over the back of the chair.
The bird flew over the house.
A general is over a captain.

up significa “arriba” o en un lugar más alto.
Ejemplos:
Walk up the hill.
Go up the stairs.
I live up the road.

down significa “hacia abajo”.
Ejemplos:
Climb down the tree.
Come down the stairs.
I live down the street.

beside significa “al lado de” y “junto a”.
Ejemplos:
She is sitting beside the lake.
Standing beside the door.

near significa “cerca de”.
Ejemplos:
We live near the school.
He lives near the church.

to expresa movimiento y se traduce por “hacia” y “a”. También indica dirección. Se usa delante del complemento directo. Se omite to delante de home.
Ejemplos:
We are going to town.
I always wa1k to work.
He was taken to hospital.
Throw the ball to me.
It is ten minutes to five.
Go home; she left home; walk home.

towards también significa “hacia”.
Ejemplos:
Walk towards the river.
Come towards me.

with describe las características de una persona e indica “en compañía de”. Tambien indica el instrumento con que se hace algo.
Ejemplos:
Cut the bread with a knife.
Come with us.
Stay to dinner with me.
The man with the beard.

without denota falta de; que no tiene algo.
Ejemplos:
He went on without a hat.
I always have my coffee without sugar.

among significa “entre más de dos” o “en medio de”.
Ejemplos:
Divide this cake among the four or you.
A house among the hills.

between significa “entre dos”.
Ejemplos:
Sitting between Mary and John.
Standing between the two trees.
